Users Stopping Slimming Medications Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that patients who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying such treatments must be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to starting mass within about one and a half years.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that people who shed pounds through dieting usually have a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Experts propose the mechanism of the injections explains the heightened regain.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have come off the jabs report a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced something that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," said an individual.

This challenge is worsened if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Use

Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is more common among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss relies on combined behavioural management.
