Approximately fifty vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.

Vehicles, exterior walls and mailboxes were defaced, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they stated in a release.

Officers say they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a man discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored liquid.

The fluid had been drawn in the pattern of a banned symbol, they added.

Police then found numerous other vandalized cars and building exteriors in the surrounding area.

Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation banning the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.

Police report preliminary tests indicate the fluid was likely human bodily fluid.

"At present there remains no indication as to where it came from; authorities are presently not aware of any physical harm in relation with the occurrence," they stated.

Local authorities said they were trying "to solve the incident" and have asked to the residents for details.

An important official commented the incident made him without words and required to be resolved promptly.

"This act affects the center of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the right-wing violent incident in 2020," he posted on social media, mentioning the death of nine people by a assailant targeting individuals of immigrant origin in 2020.
